Escorial Monastery and Valley of the Fallen

Royal site of San Lorenzo del Escorial

 

The Royal site of San Lorenzo del Escorial is situated near the mountains, at 58km from Madrid.

 

Built by order of king Felipe II in the 16th century, become the new Pantheon of the Spanish Augsburg Kings. The monastery is dedicated to Saint Laurent ( martyrised by the Romans burning him alive on a grill ), that's the reason why the building has the shape of a grill.

 

We will visit the Kings palace, the pantheons, the library and the basilica.

 

 

 

Valley of the Fallen

 

It's at less than 10 minutes drive from the Escorial Monastery. Built by order of General Franco after the Spanish Civil War.

 

The basilica was built inside the mountain, famous as well because of the huge cross on top of the mountain of more than 150m high.
